Springtime means a day on the golf greens or an afternoon of skiing in the mountains. Summers are comfortable, with daytime temperatures usually under 90 degrees, punctuated by late afternoon thundershowers. Low humidity and mountain breezes mean most homes rarely have air conditioning. Fall brings the colorful turning of the Aspens in the high country, while the weather is mildly pleasant at the lower elevations. Winter sparkles with the majesty of snowcapped mountains at our doorstep, while the city remains relatively dry, with the exception of an occasional snowfall that melts quickly. Because the weather even varies within different areas of the city, most folks learn quickly that if they don't like the current weather, wait a few minutes and the weather will change! It isn't uncommon to have sun, snow, then warm temperatures brought by Chinook winds all within a few hours time. Because of our altitude and four seasons, gardening may take a few adjustments. Our typical season runs from mid-May to mid-October. That may be shortened in areas of higher altitudes like Black Forest, tri-Lakes or Woodland Park.

Our mild weather lends itself to many outdoor activities. Ski slopes are within two to three hours of Colorado Springs; golf is available most of the year with the exception of some chilly weather in late November through about January; hiking, biking, and picnicking are also favorite pastimes many months of the year. Boaters will find water skiing just 50 miles away at the Pueblo Reservoir and excellent fishing in some of the high country lakes such as Eleven Mile Reservoir. Those wishing to fish without the boat can throw their lines into the water right here in the area of Prospect Lake and Quail Lake.
